Victim rights: Understanding the provisions for victim compensation and support under criminal procedure code, 1973

Abstract: The Indian Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) of 1973 contains provisions for victim compensation and assistance to ensure justice and rehabilitation for victims of crime. This article looks at the key provisions relating to victim compensation, including Section 357A, which mandates the establishment of a victim compensation scheme, and Section 357B, which states that compensation awarded under the scheme shall be in addition to any fine imposed on the offender. The article also highlights the role of the District Legal Services Authority and the State Legal Services Authority in deciding the amount of compensation and the importance of immediate medical benefits and interim relief for victims.
